In the global education arena, China is rapidly catching up, and South Korean universities are facing concerns about declining rankings and diminishing competitiveness in various international evaluations.
During an interview, I emphasized that South Korean universities are aware of their shortcomings. It is crucial that the disappearance of South Korean universities from the global rankings should not become a tipping point. Instead, we must urge them not to become complacent and emphasize the need for swift changes.
Based on my analysis, one of the most prominent issues facing the South Korean education system is that our universities are ill-equipped to compete on a systemic level. We need to create a system that aligns with the principles of a competitive society and provides corresponding rewards. It is also high time to reconsider the systems governing presidential elections and the attraction of international talent. South Korea has the potential for a solution that can last a century, and universities must adapt to ensure long-term leadership.
If we continue to be complacent, all universities will eventually sink, much like the passengers of the Titanic.
