On July 4th, 2023, the inaugural "1st World Korean Scientists and Engineers Conference" took place in Gangnam, Seoul. It was my honor to participate in this significant event that brought together over 1,000 talented Korean scientists and engineers shining in various fields of science and technology. It provided a valuable platform for sharing Korea's progress and discussing collaboration among industry, academia, and research institutions. Through this event, we anticipate harnessing the essential human resources necessary to enhance our country's international scientific and technological capabilities. Furthermore, this conference is expected to contribute to formulating strategies to secure the scientific and technological fields that Korea has designated as national strategic technologies.
This conference originated from a promise made by President Yoon Suk-yeol during a meeting with Korean American scientists and engineers while visiting the United States last September. It brought together overseas Korean scientists and engineers, domestic counterparts, as well as world-renowned Nobel laureates such as Professor Barry Barish of the California Institute of Technology and Professor Konstantin Novoselov of the University of Manchester, along with over 300 international participants and 700 domestic participants. It was an engaging forum for insightful discussions and collaboration opportunities. Through this conference, we look forward to showcasing Korea's scientific and technological capabilities on the international stage.
